Train Your Dog to Stop Jumping

5 Jun 2008 In: home training

Dogs get excited once in a while, and when it does, it usually jumps up on you. At first, it may feel good because of the affection it gives you, but after some time and if your pet is big already, you become irate. That’s because it always does it even when you’re not ready for some jumping and licking.

The best thing you could have done is train it when it was still a puppy and easy to learn. But if you were not able to teach him, better start now although your dog is huge to stop further bothering. Reprimanding your dog will only stop it once because it might forget it soon. Besides, it is not good to shout at your dog.

What you could do is train him to sit-stay. When this happens, be sure to kneel down and be the one to hug it. You should practice it with him, and once a day is not enough. You can go out the back door and come in using the front door to practice. The same thing should be done before your friends come over. At the start, this may be hard, but after some time, your dog will get used to it.

29 May 2008 In: Uncategorized

Of all the kinds of dog breeds, Saint Bernard is the most useful of all. First, it is a great rescue dog. Second, it can be a watchdog at your house. And third, it is a sweet and gentle playmate for children even in its huge form.

A full-frown Saint Bernard can weigh about 110-200 pounds, and can be up to 27.5 inches tall. The weight must be proportioned with the height since this kind of breed tends to become overweight. Saint Bernard is exceptionally loyal to its owners, very obedient and patient that’s why even children are fond of it.

It is also incredibly intelligent, but should be trained early to be able to manage it. Saint Bernard dogs are famous for saving many people during winter storms. More than 2000 people in need had been saved by this magnificent creature. Their sense of smell is excellent so they could find a person inches deep in the snow.

There are two kinds of Saint Bernard dogs, namely short-haired and long-haired. The short-haired kind is the one used for search and rescue since ice is collected in long-haired. Although Saint Bernard is a huge dog, it is still prone to sickness, especially to bloating. Keep in mind to take it to the vet.

Some Secrets to Effective Dog Training

9 May 2008 In: Uncategorized

Everyday, there seems to be new ways discovered to train dogs effectively. However, no matter what new things come up, there are always those tried and true methods that still remain effective up to this day. Want to know the secrets?

1. Start training young-  Like babies, puppies are able to learn things more effectively when they’re trained young. Your training will be treated by your dog as its fundamentals. The earlier the training starts, the more it will be ingrained and the more effective it will be. However, this doesn’t mean it is useless to teach an older dogs new tricks. They will still learn them, although at a slower pace.

2. Stay Gentle- Puppies naturally grow attached to their owners and masters. As they love you more, they will want to please you more. If you remain gentle with your dogs and treat them lovingly, they will grow more attached to you and want to please you more. They will try to please you by excelling in their training!

3. Prevent Inappropriate Behavior- training is like habit forming, you are forming habits for your dog to perform after you give them a command. This is why it is important to curb bad habits as well. Prevent inappropriate behavior early, and do not let it develop into something more. Also, prevention of bad habit formation means less time spent in correcting them later!

Things To Avoid when Training

Don’t even think your dog is untrainable! Dogs are very intelligent creatures and are therefore very trainable. However, there are problems that new dog owners may encounter. Here are things to avoid when dog training, just so you and your furry friend won’t get into as many sticky situations later!

1. Don’t compare your dog to other dogs- Comparing your dog’s progress to other dogs is the first recipe for disaster. You’ll only end up frustrated and losing patients with your dog!

2.Don’t lose your temper- Your dog will probably get scared if you lose your temper. And you’ll be too riled up to give the training commands properly. Both of you will suffer and the training exercise will be compromised! Also, it is wrong to yell and hit your dog, even when you’re mad! You might get in trouble with animal welfare!

3.

Don’t let your dog become your master- Because you’re afraid of being too harsh, you might become the total opposite and let your dog walk all over you! Always show your dog you’re his boss and not the other way around! Be gentle, yet firm!

4. Never give up- If your dog isn’t picking up things as fast as you would like, that’s no reason to throw in the towel. Maybe he just needs a little more time! One day, your dog will get it! You need to believe that!

5. Be consistent- this is also in line with not giving up. When you give a command and your dog doesn’t obey right away, keep at it until they do! Again, they will eventually get it with time!

We get our dogs for different reasons, so its only fair that the way we train them should correspond to what tasks we actually want them to do. There are some things that are unfair to ask for in certain dogs, and we should remember that while we are in the process of training our dogs.

It’s pretty obvious from the Hunting dog’s name what its purpose is. What they do best is flush game out of their hiding spots and retrieve them. Hunting dogs are divided into Bird Dogs, Tracking dogs and Water dogs. Water dogs, like the trusty lab, are excellent in retrieval in wet lands. Do not expect it to be as excellent a bird dog and do not train it like you would a bird dog either.

Next, we move on to house pet breeds- These are the dogs that have ore sociable responsibilities and can make excellent performers. These dogs can be trained to bark on command and to fetch objects. You cannot expect this kind of behavior to come from a more fierce dog like a Doberman.

For working dogs, training should be focused on muscle building. Also, if you want a working security dog, focus on security exercises, and the same for sled pulling or sheep herding!

Another thing to consider in training is the area that you live in. It would be kind of pointless to teach a lab to fetch waterfowl when you’re not even on hunting grounds, or do not even take up hunting as a sport!

Always remember to keep a dash of practicality when training your pet. Shower them with praise, love and affection too and they should do very well in the tasks you set out for them!

Choosing a Big Dog

9 May 2008 In: Uncategorized

Like I said before, a dog is not just a dog. Each dog breed is different, with different purposes. This factor should b considered before making your big dog selection. Take into account the kind of activity you want your dog to engage in. Here’s a guide in selecting the big dog that’s right for you!

1. Working Dogs- Many big dogs make excellent working dogs. They were bred in the first place to perform tasks like guarding property, pulling sleds and performing rescues. These breeds are known to be quick, strong and highly intelligent. These dogs make great working companions, but are not advised to be mad einto household pets. Their big sizes make it an utmost requirement that they be trained well! Some examples of working dogs are the Beauceron, Akita, Boxer, Doberman PInscher and the Great Swiss Mountain Dog.

2. Hunting Dogs- Hunting dogs make excellent companions in hunting. They can spot game and carry them back using their mouths. These dogs are very smart and have super heightened senses. Some examples include the German Shorthaired Pointer, the Griffon and the Polish Hunting Dog.

2. Assistance dogs- Trained to help people with disabilities, there are 3 classifications of assistance dogs. They are guide dogs (for the blind), hearing dogs (for the hearing impaired) and service dogs (mobility assistance dogs). These dogs are extremely smart, gentle and easy to train. Collies, Golden Retrievers, Labradors and German Shepherds are the most popular kinds of assistance dogs!

Big Dog Breed 1: Labradors

9 May 2008 In: Uncategorized

I think, among all the big dogs, my favorite breed is that of the Labrador Retriever. For big dogs, they are extremely gentle, but make excellent guard dogs and hunting companions as well. Here’s some more info. about them!

The Lab is a kind of a gun dog, and is one of the most popular breeds of dogs found in the world. Labs make great assistance dogs, as they have the reputation to be extremely good natured, gentle, energetic and extremely bright! Labradors also make great companion dogs and working dogs too! Labradors work extremely well with little children, so they are an excellent big dog to get for a house with kids. They have also been known to perform well in shows.

Labrador retriever’s have the tendency to become to “wild” and boisterous if left untamed, so it is best to train them early. Labradors also have the reputation to be always after “food and fun”, so get your treats on the ready if you want to get a Lab!

Labs grow to be large dogs, usually weighing in at around 80 lbs for males and 70 lbs for females. Be warned though, that Labs do have the tendency to become overweight. Labradors are usually gold, black or brown in color. Labs adapt easily to a wide range of functions. That’s why they make very good pets! They are not territorial, aggressive and destructive. Labradors, as from the name, are also very good retrievers. They like holding things in their mouths.

Owners should be warned that they have the tendency to chew things, and should be trained out of this naught behavior. Labradors love to run and swim and are excellent to take on trips! These qualities make them ideal pets, and my personal favorite choices for big dogs too!

Are You Sure You’re Ready For A Big Dog?

9 May 2008 In: Uncategorized

There are a world of responsibilities associated with getting a dog- any dog for that matter. Many people may think that a dog is just a dog, that they are all the same and it doesn’t really matter what kind of breed they get! Well, these people are dead wrong!

All dogs are different. Different breeds have different temperaments. Now, if you’ve found yourself taking a liking to a big breed, you have to stop and ask yourself, “Are you sure you’re ready for a big dog?” Here are some considerations to take into account if you ar eindeed thinking of getting a big dog.

1. Big dogs, especially purebreds, cost more- Can you shoulder this expense?

2.Big dogs will require a lot more space compared to say, a chihuahua- Does your present home have enough space to accommodate a future giant? Will your dog be comfortable and safe bounding about the place? If you live in close quarters, will you and your neighbors be able to live with the loud noises a big dog makes?

3. Big dogs need more food- Big dogs, as expected, have big appetites too. They can consume two to three times as much food as a small dog. Can your budget handle buying so much dog food?

Think about these questions before getting a big dog. It would be unfair for you and your pet if you really can’t handle the responsibility.
